To Compound Is To Tremble begins with the compound: a linguistic structure in which distinct elements enter into relation to produce a meaning that cannot be reduced to either element alone. Across textile, writing, and sculptural works, the exhibition asks what kinds of relation become possible when difference is neither erased nor resolved.

German compound words are bleached into protective military cotton fabric, appearing through the irreversible removal of colour. Elsewhere, original poems are typewritten on cotton paper and moulded within pigmented beeswax and dammar, leaving language suspended between preservation and disappearance. Through subtraction and accumulation, exposure and concealment, language emerges as both symbolic and material: meaning takes shape through the material conditions of its appearance.

Compounding thus becomes a philosophical proposition. To compound is to bring different elements into an encounter that reverberates beyond their conjunction. To tremble names the affective state of such a relation: to be subjected to encounter is neither to collapse nor to settle, but to remain responsive to what it sets in motion.
